Nigel has been practising for 12 years and has qualified as a clinical specialist. He comments: “It is every physiotherapist’s dream to have their own clinic and run it according to their ideals. I have always wanted to provide cost-effective physiotherapy which makes a difference quickly but enables clients to manage the problem if that is what they wish to do.”
Nigel heard about the Kickstart programme through Urban Biz and Millennium Renaissance Consultants, based in Godwin Street, Bradford. Floyd Peltier, a Business Counsellor at MRC, provided intensive support through the business planning process and helped Nigel to find suitable premises at the Centre for Enterprise, in Manningham Lane. “The Jobcentre and Chamber have been great too, so helpful,” says Nigel. “It was stressful to think of setting up on my own, wondering if I was doing the right thing. With their help and Floyd’s I feel that I am not alone; there are people who are there for me and interested in what I want to achieve. That makes me feel more confident and at ease to get on with the job I enjoy doing, resulting in my being able to attract more clients.”
Nigel’s business is now fully operational. He assesses clients’ needs and treats them using hands-on techniques, exercise, electrotherapy and other forms of physiotherapy. He hopes to establish a working relationship with an NHS Hospital Trust, with Primary Care Trusts and with doctors’ practices to identify patients who can be treated at his clinic as an alternative to being treated in hospital or admitted to a care home. “This would free up valuable bed space, saving the NHS and Social Services a great deal of money. It would also enable people to remain in their own home, which is where they would prefer to be, and enable me to employ physiotherapists and assistants in my Be Well Feel Well clinic.” Most importantly it would save the over-stretched NHS and Social Services departments – and the taxpayer – a great deal of money.
